Background

The Media and Information Literacy (MIL) – ASEAN Teachers’ Virtual Boot Camp supports UNESCO’s goal to ensure that all citizens have access to media and information competencies. 

The Media and Information Literacy Teachers’ Boot Camp  aims to train and deepen the understanding of the importance of media and information literacy in a fast-moving, digital media landscape among teachers and teacher educators  namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.

Education

The virtual Boot Camp will train 100 teachers and teacher educators from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand and provide them with knowledge and skills pertaining to teaching media and information literacy across the curriculum.

Integration

This virtual Boot Camp also culminates with a capstone course in which it will enable participants to integrate MIL across curriculum and develop critical thinking capacity of students so that they can actively engage with different segments of the society while promoting the civic education movement.

Inclusivity

Seminars in Media and Information Literacy Teachers’ Virtual Boot Camp will address the growing needs of media and information literacy (MIL), new pedagogical skills, and curricula development, thus making education more inclusive and contributing to media and information literate societies.

Expand participants’ knowledge and competencies on topics related to Media and Information Literacy (MIL) to enable them to integrate MIL across curriculum and develop critical thinking capacity of students so that they can actively engage with different segments of the society.

Build a network with other Southeast Asian teachers and teacher educators for future collaboration and knowledge as well as classroom experience sharing in teaching / integrating MIL across curriculum.

Who should attend the MIL ASEAN Teachers’ Virtual BootCamp?

This event is open to teachers, teacher educators, school administrators who are currently teaching in public schools or private schools or teacher training institutes or, education officers or curriculum officers involved in curriculum planning or supervision of schools at the age of 25 to 50 years old from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.

What are the criteria in the participant selection?

A total of 100 aspiring and highly motivated pre-service or in-service  school teachers, teacher educators and school administrators/officers will be selected, based on the background of participants and balanced geographical representation is ensured that a wide variety of perspectives will be brought into the working process.

Is there a required educational background? What if I do not have a Media and Information Literacy (MIL) background?

We accept applicants from various backgrounds who are interested in advancing MIL in their home countries. 

How much does it cost to join the virtual BootCamp?

This virtual BootCamp is FULLY-FUNDED, it does not cost anything.

Do we get a certificate of participation in your virtual BootCamp?

Yes. Participants will receive a certificate of participation that is automatically emailed once they complete the required work for the three-day virtual BootCamp and other programming activities. Participants are required to commit at least 20 hours to the MIL BootCamp activities and programs.

What will I do at the MIL ASEAN Teachers’ Virtual BootCamp?

Participants in the virtual BootCamp will have an opportunity to participate in informational sessions, discussions on selected topics related to MIL. They will also be asked to develop an action plan after the sessions.

Do I need to prepare anything prior to the BootCamp?

Participants will be asked to review some of the materials related to the theme of the BootCamp. They will also be asked to familiarize themselves with other participants and to start making plans for their proposed action plan.

Do we need to prepare anything else?

Just be ready to learn and share! Take the opportunity to network and collaborate with fellow participants. Prepare questions for our speakers and experts and share your own ideas. We would love to hear from you as well.

Who are the ideal participants of the BootCamp?

The 100 highly qualified and motivated school teachers or teacher educators will be selected to join Media and Information Literacy ASEAN Teachers’ Virtual Bootcamp. Participants are required to commit at least 20 hours for the MIL Bootcamp activities and programs. Participants are highly recommended to take off days to participate productively in and achieve the most from the Bootcamp.

Is this the first ASEAN Teachers’ virtual BootCamp?

This project is a continuation of a previously successful TechCamp Malaysia – Philippines 2021 project funded by the U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur and Penang Institute. TechCamp Malaysia – Philippines, a mini TechCamp is a funded alumni project from TechCamp Malaysia 2020, which was organized by the Media and Information Literacy for ASEAN Network (MIL for ASEAN Network).
